This project is the result of the collaboration between Boijmans van Beuningen x Piranesi. Piranesi is considered the greatest print artist of his time. His prints are well-known for their spatial manipulation and playful visual paradoxes. Piranesi was originally an architect, but he was also involved in archeology and writing. His versatility of interests can also be seen in his achievements. As an artist, he has a rational side and a poetic side, which symbolizes his outer world and inner world. This contradiction has been chosen as the theme for this exhibition “Between two Worlds”. Important in this design is to increase the differences in the two worlds. There are five spatial contrast in the exhibition zones; atmosphere, exposition format, lightning, framing and movement.
Piranesi creates 2 dimensional artworks that are inspired by the 3 dimensional. This project has a reverse approach. Here the 2 dimensional prints of Piranesi are used as inspiration, to make 3 dimensional spaces and objects. The exhibition has a limited color palette. Black and white are the main colors with the occasional gray in between. The colors represent the two opposite world views of Piranesi. White represents his analytical worldview and black represents his cynistic worldview with the accompanying series of prints. In the analytical exhibition spaces, exposure, framing en the movement in the space.
